The C-section “shelf”: why so many mums are going about it completely backwards

If you have had a C-section, you probably know exactly what we mean.

That little overhang just above the scar. The fold that sits on your waistband. The bit you tug your top over every time you sit down.

You might have lost the baby weight. You might be eating well and walking every day. And it is still there.

We want to say this first, because nobody else seems to: it is not your fault. And it is not because you haven’t tried hard enough.

Lower belly shelf above a C-section scar

The “shelf” many mums notice above their C-section scar.

If you’ve tried everything too…

Scar massage. Core programmes. Diets. High-waisted jeans to hide it. Planks every evening after bedtime.

Most of the mums who write to us have tried at least three of these. Many have tried all of them.

Lower belly folding over the C-section line

You might recognise these thoughts

“I’m back to my pre-pregnancy weight. So why does my lower belly still hang over my scar?”

One of the thoughts we hear most often

“Jeans dig right into it. Leggings roll down over it. I’ve started living in dresses.”

Very common in the first year after a C-section

If that sounds familiar, keep reading. What comes next explains why the usual solutions keep letting you down.

What no one told us

During pregnancy, your abdominal wall stretches enormously to make room for your baby. The muscles at the front widen and lengthen. Many women are left with a gap down the middle, called diastasis recti.

After a C-section, there is one more thing going on. The area around the scar has been through surgery. While the wall above it is still stretched and soft, the scar line below it can feel firmer and tighter.

Soft above, firm below. That combination is exactly what creates the look of a “shelf”.

Belly doming during a plank

Doming down the middle during exercise is a common sign the abdominal wall is still recovering.

This is why so many approaches feel like they do nothing:

  • Crunches and intense core work – They load a wall that is still stretched. Many physios advise holding off on them early on.
  • Dieting – A stretched wall is not fat. You can’t diet it away, and you need your energy for your baby.
  • Classic shapewear – It squeezes the front only. The belly pushes out at the sides, and it rolls down right onto the scar.
  • Hiding it – High-waisted jeans and loose tops cover it. They don’t support it.

Why pressing on the front gets it backwards

“Most shapewear pushes on the front. But your belly goes all the way around.”

That is the whole difference.

Your belly is not a flat wall. It is a cylinder, with a front, sides and a back.

Press only on the front and the pressure simply moves to the sides. Add a waistband that sits right on the scar, and it rolls straight into the fold.

What actually feels supportive is the opposite: gentle, even pressure all the way around, with a high waist that sits above the scar instead of on it.

It is the same idea behind the postpartum belly wraps women have used for generations, like the bengkung in Malaysia and the faja in Mexico.

The brief we designed for exactly this

High-waist postpartum support briefs

That is why we created the Véluna High-Waist Postpartum Support Briefs.

Not a rigid waist trainer. Not a band that rolls down. Not another massage routine you won’t have time for.

A pair of briefs you pull on in seconds, with crossover panels that hold your belly front, sides and back, and a high waist that goes up to just under your bust, well above the scar.

  • 360° support: front, sides and back
  • High waist that sits above the C-section scar, not on it
  • Pulls on like ordinary underwear, no hooks, no velcro
  • Invisible under leggings, jeans and dresses
  • Breastfeeding friendly, sizes S to 3XL

What your first weeks can look like

Wearing the support briefs under joggers
Day 1 to 3Start with a few hours a day. The first thing most mums notice is simple: the belly feels held, not squeezed.
Week 1They go on in the morning and stay on: the school run, walks with the pram, under joggers or a dress.
Week 2 to 4No more tugging your top over the fold every time you sit down. Getting dressed becomes easier again.
After thatKeep wearing them alongside the gentle exercises your physio or midwife recommends.
Buttoning jeans

Getting dressed without thinking about your belly again.

Every body and every recovery is different. Véluna briefs are a comfort and support garment, not a medical device. If you have any doubt, ask your midwife, GP or physio.

“Isn’t it too late for me?”

It is the question we hear from mums whose C-section was two, five, even ten years ago.

Gentle, even support is comfortable at any stage. There is no “too late” to feel held and to get dressed without thinking about your belly. If your scar is fully healed and your doctor is happy, you can start whenever you like.

Questions mums ask us

When can I start wearing them after a C-section?

Once your midwife or doctor confirms your wound has healed. The high waist sits above the scar line, so nothing presses on it.

How do I choose my size?

Measure your waist today, not before pregnancy, and use the size finder on the product page. Between two sizes? Go up for gentler support.

Will they roll down?

The high waist goes up to just under your bust and is designed to stay in place. Choosing the right size matters: too small is more likely to roll.

Will they show under my clothes?

No. They are flat and hook-free, so they stay discreet under leggings, jeans and fitted dresses.

What if they don’t suit me?

You have 60 days to try them. Return them unworn and we refund your full purchase price. Size exchanges are free.

If you’ve had a C-section and nothing seems to touch that shelf, ask yourself one question:

Has anything ever supported your belly all the way around, without sitting on your scar?
